On the morning of March 10, a delegation from China’s Shanghai Electric Environmental Protection Group, which was conducting a study tour and research on Cambodia, held discussions with Cambodia-China Friendship Collaboration Association (CCFCA) in Phnom Penh. The two sides discussed environmental protection issues such as water sources, waste, and air pollution. In-depth exchanges were held in the energy field. H.E HIV PANHAVUTH, State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, attended and chaired this forum.

Participating in this symposium were Mr. Sao Pheakdey, Chairman of Anajak Group, Mr. KEN LO, Vice President of (CCFCA) Promotion Association, Mr. Tong David, President of X’ Trust Group, Ms. Ear Sophea, CEO of X’ Capital, etc.

H.E HIV PANHAVUTH, State Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, extended a warm welcome to the Shanghai Electric delegation for its first study tour to Cambodia at the ceremony. He introduced that Cambodia-China relations have a long and deep-rooted history. The iron-clad relationship between the two countries was laid and established by His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk and China’s top leaders, and continued to develop and by Prince Hun Sen and subsequent Chinese leaders. At present, as a new generation leader of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Prince Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, continues to strengthen and expand the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries, starting from the framework and concept of diamond cooperation and proposing that 2024 be the “China-Cambodia People-to-People Exchange Year.
He pointed out that Cambodia once faced the problem of power shortage, and the royal government tried its best to take measures to solve and meet the problem of increasing electricity consumption year by year, including purchasing electricity from neighboring countries and developing hydropower stations and other projects. Cambodia’s current power supply comes from four major areas, namely hydropower, coal-fired power generation, fuel-fired power generation and solar power generation. However, there are still some challenges in the above areas, that is, hydropower projects can only provide sufficient power supply during the rainy season, and cannot meet power demand during the dry season due to lack of water in hydropower stations. In addition, the Royal Government announced that it would stop approving new coal-fired power plant projects. The burning of heavy oil also causes environmental pollution, and solar power generation is far from being able to meet the demand for electricity.
He emphasized that on the other hand, as Cambodia, especially the capital Phnom Penh, is currently in the urbanization development stage, it is facing the impact of environmental pollution, especially sewage, solid waste and air problems, so he believes that the Shanghai Electric delegation will pass this inspection and research , will pave the way for the company’s future investment in Cambodia and actively participate in solving the problems faced by Phnom Penh in the fields of energy and environmental protection, especially to promote green growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop sustainable clean energy.

Mr. Ji Yong, General Manager of Shanghai Electric’s South China Headquarters, expressed his sincere gratitude to the H.E HIV PANHAVUTH State Secretary and the leading cadres of (CCFCA) for taking valuable time to hold discussions with the delegation over the weekend.

He introduced that Shanghai Electric is a core industry group focusing on the development of energy conservation and environmental protection, pollution control, and green energy. He said that over the past 40 years since China’s reform and opening up, it has faced the impact of environmental pollution during the urbanization development stage, which has led to many gratifying results in the fields of technology research and development in the environmental protection industry. Therefore, through investigation and research, Shanghai Electric will bring its best experience and knowledge in the field of environmental protection to Cambodia, and is committed to participating in improving environmental protection and pollution control issues such as water sources, solid waste and atmosphere.
General Manager Ji Yong emphasized that after returning home from this first inspection and study of Cambodia, the delegation will publicize and introduce the actual situation in Cambodia to the company’s relevant partners in order to attract more investors to invest in Cambodia. At the same time, he invited the State Secretary of H.E HIV PANHAVUTH and the leading cadres of the (CCFCA) to visit China at an appropriate time to further deepen bilateral friendship and friendly cooperation.
